The Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue could not accomplish what it does without the help of hundreds of people like you. To our staff and animals, our volunteers are our heroes. As you can see below, we have all kinds of jobs you can help us with − from fundraising and dog walking to special events and more. In every capacity our volunteers are a valuable resource; people who make a very big difference in the lives of many animals.

We appreciate your help … and the animals do too! We think there’s a ring of truth to this quote from Anatole France: “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

All potential volunteers are asked to complete our Volunteer Application Form (** No Volunteers are needed at this time)– and attend a two-hour orientation session at the shelter.

If you are under 16 then your parent or guardian must also apply to become a volunteer; and volunteer with you.

Here are some of the ways you can help us:

Birthday Party Hostess

Parties take place Saturdays and Sundays at a scheduled time between noon and 4 pm.

Duties include:

  • Greeting party guests
  • Preparing the birthday party room and cleaning it up
  • Coordinating a craft/activity
  • Providing a tour of the shelter

Dog Walking

Dog walkers must have experience and must be 19 years of age or older. The hours for dog walking are 11 am – 4:30 pm, Sunday to Saturday. Only dogs who are ready for adoption can be walked.

Volunteers will help our shelter staff conduct our various fundraising activities, including ticket sales, yard sales, annual Dog Jog, 50/50, etc.

Light Housekeeping

Volunteers help with sorting, organizing and laundry.

Project Work

Volunteers help with various projects such as landscaping, construction, painting, etc.

Shelter Greeter/Escort

The Shelter Greeter/Escort greets and escorts visitors to the different areas of the shelter such as the Adoption Rooms, Outdoor Dog Run and Reception. He/she provides information and answers questions about shelter activities such as adoptions. Training will be provided.

Special Events

Volunteers help with special events throughout the year. The work will vary depending on the event.
